Vision on the go: How well can we see when we walk?
We usually study vision under very well controlled conditions, without eye, head or body movements. But visual tasks have to be done most frequently when we are not still, but moving through the environment. This locomotion introduces great challenges to visual stability and might affect how well we can perform visual tasks. We have begun to study this situation when observers are walking or running on a treadmill while solving visual tasks. Various kinds of head movements due to locomotion need to be compensated by appropriate eye movements or otherwise to allow for visual stability and good performance. Preliminary results indicate that the human visual system might have developed to do especially well under running conditions.
