Changing the Paradigm: What Biofilms Are Doing to Microbiology

Typing antibiotic resistance into pubmed.gov instantly brought forward 114,358 papers, of which 12,989 were review articles in the field. The return to the “preantibiotic era” brings fear to those who can still remember those days. Yet in the background insidious chronic infections involving biofilms, which account for >70% of human infections, have never played by our rules of antibiotic use and have likely contributed to antibiotic resistance. The multifactorial mechanisms of the innate tolerance of biofilms to antimicrobials will be looked at in the context of considerations that need to be made as we develop the next generations of antimicrobials.
